STYLE SPOTLIGHT ON: Dayna Hamer

For this weeks Style Spotlight I would like to shine a light on a very influential figure to me, my good friend and mentor Dayna L Hamer. I promise you it is worth taking the time to read this article just to get the slightest glimpse into her life that I can provide to you, because her name is one-hundred-percent worth remembering. She is certainly taking on the fashion industry by storm and big things are coming from her - There is no doubt in my mind.

I met Dayna just a year ago at a fashion show casting in Johnson and Wales University. I simply wanted to watch the models try out, transfixed by these types of occasions, however not having the interest myself, or rather the confidence, to participate. She was a stranger to me and I to her, but none-the-less a beautiful and life transforming gesture took place that day. This stranger - exactly that a stranger- encouraged me to take a chance and put myself out there. I tried out, made the show, and have been in love with doing runway ever since.  The thing, however, that I found myself reflecting on about this point in time, was the reason why this stranger nudged me to engage this experience and secondly why did I listen to her. It wasn't long before Dayna no longer was a stranger to me and became an influential figure and practically a big sister. In getting to know her better I learned the answer to both of my questions. I am not over exaggerating when I say that Dayna is a person who exemplifies and harnesses the beauty that humanity assumes the potential to have. Dayna has the tendency to bring out the very best in people when they sometimes faulter to do it themselves. She invests her wisdom and guidance in others, whether it is with intention or not, and inspires them to dedicate themselves to their cause and shine at whatever it is that they want to do. The single most valuable lesson I took away from meeting her that day was  not to be reserved in taking risks because you never know where these fleeting moments will take you. A conversation with her will really get you thinking, especially hearing the passion in her voice when she talks about fashion.

At just nine years old, Dayna's love for fashion began. This was the first time she had the freedom to pick out whatever she wanted to dress herself in. Her unique sense of style began to develop and she started to become more"in tune" with her own particular fashion sense. Attending a Berkeley fashion workshop in high school was a pivotal experience that transformed her perspective of the fashion industry and it  that it became clear to her that it is the very field in which she wanted to pursue a career.

On an average day you can catch her in a chic, minimal ensemble with "a splash of edginess". The thing that I notice about Daynas wardrobe selection from day to day, is that it is versatile and always makes a statement- a fabulous one at that. She is a master of mixing prints and utilizes color elegantly. On any given day, her wardrobe will reflect her mood in a very clean, distinct, and  well put together look. Think again if you thought you could catch her ever slumming around in sweatpants because even her casual outfits are laced with an impeccable swagg.

Dayna identifies fashion as a tool that is used to communicate ones sense of self to the world without any limitations or boundaries; it is a "creative outlet for people to engage themselves in". Fashion is not just an art she describes, but it is an embodiment of characteristics such as confidence and self empowerment. She has worked for years in many different positions and taking on various roles including retial sales, event coordinating, fashion show production, styling, merchandise marketing,... and the list goes on! With such a well reounded inventory of experience, Dana possesses a very articulate and full range of skills.

So what can we expect this young, ambitious, capable, and above all talented individual to have in store? She is constantly working on new projects and seeking out new experiences to further diversify her perspective of the industry. Sure a job is a high priority but through her work her true message  is to "create beautiful images through fashion and tell a story, to empower the men and women of this world". As you can see she is a remarkable human being and I am thankful and gracious that I met her at this point and time and I have the unique opportunity to watch her grow and achieve her dreams as for the rest... you'll just have to visit the Fashionistas Village for that. Have a fab day dolls!

Dorm DIY's

Its that time of year again! Getting back into the swing of things, unpacking, and attending your first week of classes. Get your dorm ready for a great year too by giving it the time and attention it needs to achieve its fabulosity capacity! There is certainly a strong connection between a person's overall well being and their environment. Transforming your dorm room into a space that promotes creativity  & positivity will increase your overall mood and feeling of inspiration. Personally, I am someone who tends to spend a large amount of time in my room, so dorm decoration is key to a feel-good-promoting space. Decorating on a college girls budget is an experience that encourages innovation and inventiveness with resources. I used Pinterest as an organization tool to filter my vision into one concept space, and then I set off to Walmart, Target, and Bed Bath & Beyond to recreate all of the ideas I compiled in a budget friendly means.

Quick Tips

Tip #1: You Don't Have to Buy Everything at the Same Time!

You can start off by purchasing the basics; a comforter set, a rug, and a mirror, that match your desired color scheme. Pick up the decor during the next few weeks. This gives you the option to simultaneously save money from your PT job, while still working towards fulfilling your room concept.

Tip #2: A Little Goes a Long Way; Money & Items

Simply by purchasing the necessary items in a cohesive and repetitive color scheme, you would be surprised how little you actually need to spend - compared to how much you thought you would be spending- to achieve an artsy tumblr worthy room. (I will link as many of the same or similar pieces that I purchased so you can pick up any of the items that strike your fancy)

Tip #3: Choose Your Theme

I decided that I wanted my room to be a classy, clean, and crisp all white ensemble that would make me feel glamorous and rejuvenated whether I was waking up to pick out my ootd or writing a blog post late at night.

Tip #4: Have Fun With it!

Let your creativity reign free, A little glitter and glue can take your look from plain jane to next level extravagance.

Ok, lets get started! first things first:

All white ruched twin XL bed set purchased from Bed Bath & Beyond. I double strung decorative  lights on the wall: one basic white string lights from BBB and the second set are circular globe lights (from 5-Below) that my sister no longer wanted, so I gladly salvaged them. I pinned up  black and white photos of family and friends using clothes pins which I dipped in Elmer's glue and gold glitter.

 FUNctional Organization & Storage

Traditional plastic bins do their job and do it well- trust whats tried and true. For the storage of bulky items such as non-persishable foods, tupperware, shoes, towels, and other bathroom items I used large plastic storage units. The 5 Drawer Stacked Bins that are pictured in the top photo on the right -hand side, I spray painted gold to match the gold accents sprinkled around the room. I liked how the touch of gold adds richness and character. I also spray-painted my formerly black full length Mirror to be white. Spray painting is a great way to save money, because you can recycle pieces that you already have and give them a new life in your new space. Something as simple as changing color conforms your things rather than going out and buying them new.

I wanted makeup storage that was highly practical yet aesthetically favorable. These clear plastic containers for my makeup and nail polish dual function as methods of organization and decorative room accents. I placed one white faux hydrangea (faux flower) beside  my makeup organizer to give it a pretty and polished look.

Lets Talk Jewelry

Jewelry storage can get pretty expensive. The thing about jewelry is that it accumulates quite a bit over time. You buy a necklace here get some earrings there, and before you know it, you forget how much jewelry you actually have. But now that you're moving you have to find a way to accommodate it all in your space! I bought a multi-tiered rack to put all of my bracelets on. This is a nice piece, because it includes a concave tray to store earrings accesibly and efficiently. Necklace storage can be akward, bulky, and expensive, so I went with my fav go-to method. A super super easy and inexpensive fix for necklaces, bags, or anything that needs to be hung is... command hooks! This is without a doubt the least expensive and most elegant looking option - its a built in decoration.

Decor & Details

White faux fur rug - pretty self explanitory

These circle mirrors were given to me as a gift and were hung up in my room at home, but I loved them so much that I had to bring them with me! They are incredibly simple yet they do so much to make the space look more dynamic. As a centerpiece I whipped together an accent Letter in just two steps by: coating a wooden block letter with elmers glue and sprinkling gold glitter on top. The letters can easily be found at any local craft store or walmart in the arts an crafts department.

I decided that I wanted some fashion wal-art to spruce up the space and further the gold accents to seamlessly marry the gold and white color scheme. Initially I planned on purchasing paintings from Etsy, but I figured it didn't make sense to spend somewhere over thirty dollars per picture, when I could put something together myself. To frame the art I actually used gold lined diploma display frames ; a nifty hack -looking just as nice while still being less money- than actual picture frames. I ran a basic google search and printed some of my favorite image results and mounted them on the inside of my door using velcro command strips.

When everything was said and done, this was how my room turned out!

Now Sit Back, Relax, & Enjoy the View!
 Have a Fab Semester

Sweater Weather

Hello Dolls!

So the First official day of the Fall season is technically September 23rd. You can, however, get  a head start on your fall wardrobe by scoring fab prices, before the leaves start changing color and the air gets its brisk sharpness. Don't break the bank this season - shop smart for the 'Fashionistas Trifecta' ;  best quality, best styles, and best prices by making your trips to stores like Target, Marshall's, and Nordstrom Rack.  One of my absolute favorite things about living in New England is the fact that we get the unique opportunity to experience all of the seasons. Before you get started complaining about the cold, you should try and look at things through a positive lens. Its not so bad when your prepared for the temperature drop and bundle up accordingly! After all, fall does have some of the best seasonal perks like Halloween, apple picking, and chunky sweaters. Get inspired by checking out my FFI- Fall Fashion Inspiration Board on Pinterest & get shopping for those trench coats, and knee-high boots. Stay Fab!
